Volkswagen of South Africa has built a new R200 million parts distribution warehouse in the logistic warehousing hub in Centurion.

The 26 000m2 world class facility is sapproximately seven storeys high, which gives it ample volume space for stacked storage. The new facility, expected to be fully operational by mid 2010, will store and distribute parts for the Volkswagen, Audi, and Volkswagen Commercial Vehicle Brands.
The TOA VX-2000 Integrated Voice Evacuation System (covered by a 5 Year Warranty), originally built to comply with EN60849:2005 (adopted by SA as SANS60849) is ideal for this type of application where there are multiple zones and each floor is to be treated as an independent zone which is capable of having its own dedicated microphone for the Fire Marshall controlling that floor.
It also provides for Multiple Zone and Fireman's microphones on the system, each with their own priority status as well as phased evacuation as multiple messages and or tones can be broadcast in different zones / areas simultaneously.

The entire system is self-monitored every 100 seconds with fault indications registering on the rack equipment as well as the control microphones. Logs are automatically generated (announcements, system faults, inputs, automatic messages and alarm tones, faulty lines, etc).
It is also possible to utilize the system for BGM (Background Music) as each zone is able to have its own music source and volume levels or the same source can be routed to specific zones, a group of zones or all zones). White noise too, can be integrated with the system.

Mike Glendinning, Director of Sales and Marketing at VWSA says: “The construction of our new parts distribution warehouse further entrenches VW of SA’s commitment and confidence in the future of the motor industry in South Africa. The R200 million investment complements the R3 billion that has been invested in upgrading and modernising our production plant in Uitenhage in preparation for the introduction of future models.”
The new parts distribution facility is one of the seven warehouses of its kind in the VW Worldwide Group, which illustrates the confidence that our Group recognises in the growth potential of VW of SA as well as our important manufacturing role within the Group.”

The new warehouse will replace the 35 year old facility in Roodekop which was struggling to keep pace with the increasing demands of modern day just in time parts distribution. The warehouse supplies parts to over 150 VW, Audi and VW Commercial Vehicles dealerships in the country. It also distributes parts to seven countries in the sub Saharan region. About 200 people will be employed in the new facility.

John Burton, project manager of the new parts distribution warehouse, says: “Nearly R27 million of the investment has been allocated to the training of our employees as well as the installation of a new state of the art computerised parts distribution system.”

“In our business, people are core to our success and the training will equip them with skills that will ensure that they are fit to deliver world class service at all times.”

Burton adds: “The improved logistic layout, new processes and systems, will make the new warehouse more efficient and far more productive. The Greenfield plan has allowed us to design and construct a facility that will be used as a benchmark in the Group in terms of its processes, systems and physical layout.”

The parts distribution warehouse is projecting a R1,8 billion turnover for 2010.
